HAPPYFAMILY Makes Healthy Eating Easier

Before embarking on this sleep consulting adventure, I wore many hats.

One of them was writing a healthy living blog.  I had gotten rid of my asthma, solved my infertility problems and just gotten healthier by changing my diet, taking supplements and exercising, and I learned that many people wanted to know how I did it!  So instead of writing individual emails answering specific questions, I thought I’d put my “wealth of knowledge” in one place for easy reference.

I tell you this so you’ll understand I don’t eat “healthy” just to fit into my college jeans (pre-freshman 15!), but I really get the importance of nutrition and putting GOOD food into your body.

When my kids were babies, I made my own baby food.  Never thought I would.  Ever.  I imagined easy trips to Target to buy 20 jars of each “flavor” (are peas a flavor??) and have more time to play with the baby.  But then I read Super Baby Food by Ruth Yaron (it was a gift) and I thought, “I can do this!”  Long story short,  8 years later I’m still make the cubes for recipes and using them for recipes in Jessica Seinfeld’s Deceptively Delicious cookbook (the one where she hides veggies…except my kids help make the brownies and muffins with the cubes, so I’m not “hiding” anything!).  I like that bump of nutrition I’m adding to their snacks, knowing they’re getting a ridiculous amount of fruits and veggies. But I digress…

If there had been a company that had organic and healthy options when my first was a baby, I would have gladly tried them.  But if they were out there, those companies weren’t marketing to me.  Silly them.

These days, mommas are lucky!  Companies like HAPPYFAMILY are doing all the work for you.  They have organic products for babies, toddlers and kids, including:

  • Cereals
  • Pouches for babies and toddlers
  • Frozen meals
  • Puffs
  • Mini rice cakes
  • Snacks

Many of my clients, particularly those in NYC who are short on time in the morning (their children ARE sleeping later now that they have healthy sleep habits!), grab a pouch and snack for the walk to daycare or the subway.  If it’s a choice between waking a child up for a sit-down breakfast or getting to work on time…well, that really isn’t a fair choice, is it?

We’ve all been in the situation of having a fun day at the zoo (or park, or great aunt Matilda’s house for a 4-generation family reunion) with the baby or toddler and wrestling with an overstuffed diaper bag trying to find the food, spoon, bowl, bib…it’s a logistical nightmare, especially if you have an older child pulling on your arm wanting to go–NOW–to see the monkeys (at the zoo…not the relatives!).  Now imagine pulling out a pouch, and being done with it before you would have even found the spoon in the first place.  Genius.

I think that’s one of the reasons this company has been so successful.  They get the health-convenience connection that moms crave.

What I like about these products:

  • They really are superfoods, with the super grain Salba, quinoa, blueberry, coconut, to name a few.  And they have extra choline for brain development, Omega 3’s, Vitamin D, magnesium, calcium, antioxidants and fiber…it’s more than just a plain applesauce pouch.
  • The cereals have DHA and probiotics, and come in organic brown rice, multigrain or oatmeal
  • Many products have less sugar and are naturally sweetened with fruit juice
  • The company is very allergy conscious. My son has a severe nut allergy, so I am always happy to see a company that posts allergy information on its website. This chart makes it incredibly easy to search for safe foods for your child.
  • The site has a blog with healthy recipes and a resource section for nutrition

When I work with clients, I don’t have “sleep blinders” on…I look at the WHOLE child, which includes diet.  You’d be surprised how often too much sugar, artificial colors and flavors, along with the timing of meals and snacks, play a part in children’s sleep issues.  And for young babies, reflux and diet are often intimately linked (and those of you with babies suffering through reflux can attest to the fact that reflux affects sleep as well).

So after hearing from 3 different clients this week raving about these products, I figured it was time to share the love with you!  Eating these foods won’t magically make your child sleep through the night (wouldn’t that be a great thing to market!), but if you’re making healthy choices at mealtime, why not make changes with your child’s sleep schedule to create healthy sleep habits?

Isn’t is great that there are companies like HAPPYFAMILY that make it easier and more convenient to offer healthy alternatives to our kids?  If you’d like to join their mailing list to receive coupons, special offers and new product information, click here.
